His name 'Ghulam'(Hindi: ग़ुलाम, Urdu: غلام, translation: Slave) was given by his father, who was a fan of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib. He used to live in Lahore. He'd been listening to Khan Sahib since childhood. Ustad Ghulam Ali finally met Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib as a teen in Kabul. Ustad Ghulam Ali's father requested Khan Sahib to take his son as a disciple. But Khan Sahib was on the road, so it wasn't possible. But after repeated requests from Ustad Ghulam Ali's father, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib asked the young Ustad Ghulam Ali to sing something. Ustad ji sang Thumri (Saiyan Bolo Tanik Mose Rahiyo Na Jaye). When he finished singing, Khan Sahib hugged Ustad Ghulam Ali and made him his disciple
